A beautiful birthing story:  On the morning of the delivery of her first litter of puppies, Reba was extremely nervous.  She did not understand what was happening to her as the puppies started to be born.  Her mother, Brandy, our oldest lab who is no longer being bred, decided that she should be there to help.  She promptly went into the whelping box and began to clean Reba and the puppies as they were being born.  When they were ready she moved them over to Reba so they could begin nursing.  Usually dogs do not let other dogs near their puppies, but for some reason Reba was very comfortable with Brandy there.  After the delivery Brandy stayed in the box with Reba making sure she knew what to do and comforting her.  She allowed the puppies to begin nursing on her (she was always an amazing mom when she had puppies) and now she has milk of her own and is sharing the responsibility of nursing the puppies.  This is something that happens in the wild with wolf packs, but hardly ever with domestic dogs.
